Over twelve unforgettable days, we follow these paths across Sri Lanka, experiencing the country not as visitors, but as warmly welcomed guests.
From sacred cities and UNESCO-listed temples to the misty highlands of tea country and the easy rhythm of the southern coast, this Source Journey is designed to awaken the senses and gently restore the spirit. Arrive in Colombo

Once settled, we transfer to the Shangri-La Colombo, perfectly positioned along the city’s waterfront with views across Beira Lake. The remainder of the day is yours to ease into the rhythm of the journey — unwind after your travels, take a stroll along the promenade, or simply rest and settle in.
Tonight is intentionally unstructured. After crossing oceans and time zones, this first evening is about arrival in every sense of the word — allowing body and mind to slow down, and preparing you for the paths that lie ahead.

Colombo – Sigiriya
After breakfast, we travel inland from Colombo toward Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, watching the landscape gradually shift from coastal city to countryside and open plains.
Arriving in Sigiriya by early afternoon, we check in and enjoy time to rest and refresh before heading out later in the day to explore one of the island’s most extraordinary sites: Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Rising dramatically from the jungle floor, this UNESCO World Heritage Site dates back to the 5th century and is surrounded by elegant water gardens, frescoed walls, and sweeping views across the landscape. Guests who wish may climb to the summit for panoramic views and a deeper encounter with Sri Lanka’s ancient past, while others can explore the gardens and lower levels at a more leisurely pace.

Sigiriya – Polonnaruwa – Safari – Sigiriya
This morning, we journey to the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s medieval capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exploring the remarkably preserved ruins, we encounter royal palaces, sacred temples, and serene Buddha statues carved from stone, all set within a carefully planned garden city. Along the way, our local guide brings the site to life with stories of kings, monks, and daily life in the ancient capital, helping us imagine Polonnaruwa not as ruins, but as a once-thriving center of faith, art, and governance. Our exploration unfolds at an easy pace, with time to wander, pause, and take in the scale and beauty of this extraordinary archaeological site.
Afterward, we enjoy a traditional Sri Lankan lunch at a rural café, followed by an afternoon safari in a nearby national park. As we explore the landscape, we may encounter herds of wild elephants along with a variety of other wildlife, offering a memorable glimpse into Sri Lanka’s natural world.

Sigiriya – Dambulla – Matale – Kandy
After breakfast, we depart Sigiriya and visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, renowned for its ancient cave shrines, serene Buddha images, and beautifully preserved frescoes carved directly into the rock. As we explore, our guide shares stories that bring these sacred spaces to life, offering insight into the devotion and artistry that have shaped them over centuries.
Continuing onward, we stop in Matale to visit a private spice garden, where we learn about Sri Lanka’s celebrated spices, including cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, followed by a flavorful lunch inspired by local ingredients.
By afternoon, we arrive in Kandy, Sri Lanka’s last royal capital and enduring spiritual heart, set amid lush hills and centered around a tranquil lake. Exploring the city on foot with a local host, we discover its historic streets and living traditions before visiting the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most revered Buddhist sites in the world. The day concludes with a special private cultural experience, offering a meaningful and memorable introduction to Kandy’s artistic heritage.

Kandy
Today invites us into the quieter, more personal rhythms of life in and around Kandy. We begin with a visit to a local artist in her home, reached by walking through a working tea plantation. Here, we learn about traditional batik and textile artistry, created using natural materials and sustainable practices, while hearing her personal story and how these time-honored crafts are being preserved and passed on in a rapidly changing world.
Later, we head into the hills outside Kandy to join a local family for a hands-on cooking experience. After visiting a neighborhood market to select fresh ingredients, we prepare and share a traditional Sri Lankan meal, exchanging stories around the table that offer insight into everyday life.
The afternoon is at leisure, allowing time to relax, explore Kandy at your own pace, or enjoy the peaceful setting of the hotel.

Kandy – Hatton (Tea Country)
This morning, we depart Kandy and begin our journey into Sri Lanka’s legendary tea country. We start with a visit to the Royal Botanic Gardens, where an expert local guide introduces us to remarkable tropical plants, towering palms, and flowering trees, sharing stories that reveal the gardens as a living record of Sri Lanka’s botanical and colonial past.
From here, we make our way to the railway station and board a scenic train for one of the most celebrated rail journeys in the world. As the train winds through misty hills, cascading waterfalls, and endless rows of emerald tea plantations, the pace of life begins to slow.
Upon arrival in Hatton, we continue by road into the heart of the Central Highlands, arriving at Ceylon Tea Trails, the world’s first tea bungalow resort and a proud Relais & Châteaux property. Set within working tea estates and restored colonial-era bungalows, this fully inclusive retreat offers exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and sweeping mountain views.

This morning, we set out to experience a section of the Pekoe Trail, a celebrated long-distance walking route through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands and one of National Geographic’s Top Travel Experiences in the world. Walking at an unhurried pace with a local guide, we follow paths that wind through tea plantations, small villages, forested tracks, and open viewpoints, offering an immersive sense of this remarkable landscape. This section of the trail is designed for presence, not pace, allowing time to pause, take in the scenery, and appreciate the rhythms of life in tea country.
After the walk, we return to Ceylon Tea Trails for a relaxed lunch and an afternoon at leisure. Later in the day, we gather for traditional high tea, a delightful ritual featuring freshly brewed teas and elegant accompaniments served in classic plantation style. The remainder of the day is yours to enjoy the estate’s tranquil surroundings, relax by the pool, curl up with a good book, or simply take in the views that stretch endlessly before you.

Hatton | Tea Country at Leisure
This morning, we deepen our connection to tea country with a private visit to a working tea factory, guided by one of Ceylon Tea Trails’ resident planters. Here, we gain insight into the artistry and precision behind Ceylon tea, from fresh green leaf to the nuanced flavors in each cup, and come to appreciate tea not just as a drink, but as a tradition shaped by land, climate, and care.
The rest of the day is intentionally left open, inviting you to fully embrace the quiet rhythm of life in the hills. Wander the estate’s walking paths, relax by the pool, enjoy a spa treatment, or simply sit and watch the mist roll across the tea-covered slopes.
In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner, a chance to toast our time at Ceylon Tea Trails and savor one final evening surrounded by the beauty of the Central Highlands. There is no agenda this afternoon, only space. Space to rest, reflect, and absorb this remarkable place before the journey continues onward.

This morning, we leave the cool hills of tea country behind and take a scenic seaplane flight to Sri Lanka’s southern coast, watching as misty mountains give way to jungle, rivers, and finally the blue expanse of the Indian Ocean.
Upon landing, we visit a working cinnamon estate, where we are welcomed into the private home of the estate’s owners. Here, we learn about the cultivation and harvesting of true Ceylon cinnamon, a spice that has shaped Sri Lanka’s history for centuries, and gain rare insight into the traditions and daily life behind this treasured craft. Our visit culminates in a home-cooked lunch shared together, an experience that feels intimate and deeply authentic.
In the afternoon, we arrive at Cape Weligama, a dramatic clifftop retreat overlooking the Indian Ocean and a proud Relais & Châteaux property. Known for its sweeping views, elegant villas, and serene setting, Cape Weligama offers the perfect place to settle in and begin to embrace the easy rhythm of the coast. Weligama – Galle – Weligama
After breakfast, we travel along the coast toward Galle, stopping along the way to observe Sri Lanka’s iconic stilt fishermen, a tradition found only along the southern shore. Here, we pause to learn how this practice has been passed down through generations, shaped by both the rhythms of the sea and daily life along the coast.
Arriving in Galle, we explore the historic Galle Fort, one of Asia’s best-preserved colonial fortresses. Walking its ramparts and narrow streets with a local host, we discover layers of Portuguese, Dutch, and British influence woven together with contemporary life, from elegant architecture to lively cafés, boutiques, and galleries. Time is set aside to wander at your own pace, taking in the fort’s unique atmosphere and seaside setting.
In the late afternoon, we return to Cape Weligama to relax before gathering for a special farewell dinner, perfectly timed to take in the resort’s breathtaking sunsets as the sun dips into the Indian Ocean. It’s a fitting moment to reflect on the journey, share stories, and celebrate the paths we’ve followed together.

Weligama – Colombo
After breakfast, we depart the southern coast and return to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital, where old-world heritage and modern life meet. Upon arrival, we enjoy a brief orientation drive through the city, taking in its contrasting neighborhoods and layered history shaped by centuries of trade and colonial influence.
We then visit the celebrated Barefoot Gallery, an icon of Sri Lankan design and craftsmanship known for its handwoven textiles and long-standing support of local artisans. Lunch is served in the gallery’s peaceful garden café, a relaxed and fitting pause before our final afternoon in the city.
Later, we set out on a private heritage walk through Colombo with a local host, exploring historic districts and hidden corners while hearing stories that reveal the city’s evolving character, from colonial architecture to bustling market streets. The evening is at leisure, offering time to relax, pack, or enjoy a final dinner in the city.

After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for our onward journeys, supported by a seamless VIP departure experience. As Paths of Ceylon comes to a close, we carry with us memories of ancient cities, misty tea hills, shared meals, quiet walks, countless photos, and the laughter that became part of the journey itself.
